Shiso - Hojiso (Perilla) - 150 Seeds

Shiso (Perilla) Hojiso is a type of beefsteak leaf with bright and vivid colours compared to other perilla varieties. The flavour is strong and earthy.

The plants and leaves are decorative and lovely to look at. The leaves are green with burgundy/ purple undersides. Shiso prefers full sun to partial shade and rich, well-drained soil. It does not tolerate frost well. The plant is susceptible to root rot, so it is essential to ensure the soil is not too wet.

Shiso can be harvested anytime during the growing season. The leaves can be used fresh or dried. Shiso can be used in various dishes, including salads, soups, and stir-fries. It is also a popular ingredient in Japanese & Korean cuisine.

Hojiso perilla grows well in containers, so why not try to grow on your window sill?

How to Grow

For best germination, cold-stratify seeds by storing them in the fridge for three days before sowing, and soak the seed overnight in warm water. Sow in spring or after frost at 3-4mm deep, 30cm apart. Germination in 1-3 weeks at 21-24oC. Maturity in 10 weeks. Store excess seeds in the fridge in a tightly sealed, moisture-proof plastic clip lock bag.
