96 Points
Old vine grenache from Blewitt Springs promises great things and the 2021 MMAD vineyard Grenache delivers in truckloads. The cordial red syrup squeezed over old school snow cones meets fresh cranberry and maraschino cherry. Picked sage and bay leaf then lead to dusty nutmeg and red clay. Tannins are silty and fine and the wine is extremely well integrated for its youth. Drink with lamb loin chops that are pink in the middle and charred on the edges.

TASTING NOTES
PALATE
There is a purity and density, but also a lightness that belies the energy and power of the fruit. Raspberry coulis and pomegranate notes sit alongside fennel seed and cumin, and flavours continue to unfurl as the wine sits in the glass.

REGION NOTES
Located in the dress circle of Blewitt Springs, MMAD Vineyard was first planted in 1939, and the oldest Shiraz blocks date from 1941. The vineyard has the fine Maslin sands found in Blewitt Springs, and is exposed to the fresh sea breezes from the south- west. Below the sand is a layer of ironstone pebbles, and this combination of sand, ironstone, and cooling winds gives both perfume and structure to the wines.

VINIFICATION
The grapes were mostly destemmed and fermented as whole berries in open concrete and stainless steel, before aging in used 500 litre puncheons.

VINTAGE NOTES
From the first vintage for the MMAD team, and it's hard to imagine a better season. Lovely mild ripening conditions gave us Grenache with an intense core of red and blue fruit.

CELLARING POTENTIAL
Has the concentration and structure to develop fine tertiary characters in bottle over the next 15 years.

MMAD VINEYARD
The old vines of Blewitt Springs are a precious resource, and an important part of Australia's viticultural history. In early 2021, MMAD Vineyard was purchased by a quartet made up of winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and Masters of Wine Michael Hill Smith and David LeMire. MMAD takes its names from their first initials. The MMAD wines aim to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the rare old vines that thrive there, namely the Grenache planted in 1939, Shiraz planted in 1942 and Chenin Blanc planted in 1964.
