Overview

Lensbaby Obscura is not just a lens; it's an extraordinary photographic experience rooted in the early days of photography. It appeals to creators who embrace simplicity and seek to redefine photographic art by challenging themselves to work with limited choices. Obscura engages in an elegant interplay of light and darkness, resulting in unique flares and image artifacts that are unattainable with standard camera lenses.

There are three versions of Lensbaby Obscura:

  1. A 50mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve optic for the Optic Swap System.
  2. A standalone 50mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve lens.
  3. A standalone 16mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve pancake lens designed for mirrorless cameras.

Here's what each element means:

  • A pinhole, a clear, round hole in a thin material, though not technically a lens.
  • A pinhole sieve, featuring a field of pinholes radiating from a central, increasingly smaller one.
  • A zone plate, consisting of clear circular rings surrounding a central hole, with each zone corresponding to the area of the center pinhole, resulting in progressively thinner zones.

Obscura's imaging elements are durable and feature a resolution of 128K dpi, with three layers of chrome deposited on 1.5mm thick glass, before an anti-reflective coating is applied. Cleaning Obscura's glass is similar to camera lens maintenance without risking damage.

Zone plate and pinhole sieve options offer more detail than the pinhole, with a curved field of focus that creates a sweet spot. In contrast, the pinhole and pinhole sieve maintain similar resolving power across the image. Adjusting contrast, vibrance, and saturation can enhance zone plate or pinhole sieve images.
