Dead Man Walking Clare Valley Riesling 2023 11.5% 750ML
Dead Man Walking Clare Valley Riesling 2023 11.5% 750ML
Dead Man Walking was created by Tom Kies - a goulish name according to James Halliday, but one inspired by Tom's 'don't put it off, don't procrastinate, don't leave it until it's too late' approach to life. For whilst Tom was blessed with exceptional winemaking talent, a love of wine and great zeal for life, the development of this label and release of the first wine in 2016 was an integral piece of his valiant yet ultimately unsuccessful 9 year battle to overcome bowel cancer. As devoted family friends, the Hughes have taken on responsibility for Dead Man Walking to keep Tom's winemaking vision alive, whilst also providing for his two son's education through placing part proceeds from the sale of each bottle into a trust fund.
AROMA
The Riesling is richly imbued with aromas of nectarine, guava and ruby grapefruit; with floral top-notes of apple blossom and elderflower.
PALATE
The palate is softly-textural and richly flavoured, with white peach, tangerine and Limoncello.
VINTAGE NOTES
After 4 years of drought conditions, the winter of 2021 heralded the arrival of La Nina, and with it we welcomed the return of generous winter rains. 2021 was the wettest winter on record for the Barossa (Eden Valley) at 48% above average, while Clare was also blessed with soaking rainfall at 23% above average. These wet conditions replenished soil water and filled dams and aquifers to levels not seen since 2017, setting up perfect conditions for spring growth.
