Tummy time also helps babies relax and calm down when they're upset. Some experts recommend starting tummy time at about 3 months old.
But if you'd like to try it earlier, there's nothing wrong with doing it sooner!

Is Tummy time necessary?
Babies need to spend some time lying down each day. It helps with their physical development by building strength in their head, necks, arms, and shoulders and helps them develop coordination.
Baby tummy time is when your baby lies on their back and is then placed on their stomach for a short period. You can even start stomach time the day you bring home your baby from the hospital by lying the baby on your chest.
Start with a few minutes a few times per day. As your baby grows, it'll be able to stay on its stomach for a longer period.
Remember, you should supervise the baby at all times during tummy time.
And only do tummy time when your baby is awake. Babies should always sleep on their backs to decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
What are the benefits of tummy time?
Tummy time is important for a baby's development. Some of its benefits include:
- It helps develop strong neck and shoulder muscles
- Promotes gross motor skills
- It can help prevent the flat head syndrome
- It helps the baby build up the strength needed for rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and eventually walking
How to do Tummy Time
Tummy time is an important milestone for babies because it helps them get comfortable with moving around independently. Babies should spend about 10 minutes a day on their stomachs.
Try starting with 3 to 5 minutes a day. Gradually increase by several minutes each day.
You can start by placing your baby on their belly on a blanket or mat on a hard surface like a table or countertop.
As they get older, try putting your baby on their back while lying on a mattress or pillow.
If your baby likes to nurse while lying on their back, you can use a nursing pillow. Place the pillow on a blanket on the ground, then lay your baby on their stomach over the pillow, with both hands supporting their head and neck. Your baby should be facing you.
If your baby falls asleep while laying on their back, reposition them so that they are face-up instead. You can also play with your baby when they're awake. Play peekaboo, sing songs together, or just talk to them. This will help your baby develop language skills, too.
How much tummy time do babies need by age?
Newborns may tolerate tummy time for only 1 to 2 minutes at first. As your baby grows, you can increase tummy time.
By the time your baby is 5 to 6 months old, they'll likely be rolling from front to back. Then they'll roll back to the front and may even be able to push up to a sitting position on their own.
You can still give them opportunities for tummy time after they've reached these developmental stages. Tummy time can help them continue to develop muscles needed for:
- Sitting for long periods
- Crawling
- Walking
How to make time for tummy time?
It's important to make time for tummy time each day. You can try to fit it in after you bathe your little one or after a diaper change.
You may want to avoid tummy time immediately after eating, though.
For some babies, laying on their tummy when it's full may disrupt digestion - and this could lead to gas or spit-up. Other babies, however, seem to pass gas more easily on their tummies.
The younger baby is when you start tummy time, the better. This lets them get used to it. Even in the hospital, you can place a baby on its tummy on your chest, supporting its neck the whole time.
When you get home from the hospital, find quiet moments throughout your day for some tummy time. You can also lie or sit on the floor next to them and make faces or read them a board book.
Warnings and Please NOTEIn rare cases, tummy time may not be safe, such as if a baby:
- was born prematurely
- has a disability or mental health condition
- has reflux disease
If you aren't sure whether tummy time is right for your little one, talk with your baby's pediatrician. They can give you safe recommendations for tummy time.
It is mandatory to be with the baby at all times when using the tummy time water play mat and ensure active adult supervision at all times. Do not leave children or babies unsupervised in or around the tummy time water mat.
