The Beauty Mistake You’re Making In Your Sleep

The average person spends 25 years of their life asleep, so the material you rest your face on during your zzz’s can either beautify or wreak havoc on your skin over long-term use.

According to salon owner and senior therapist, Edel Featherstone of La Bella Beauty Retreat on the Gold Coast, using a cushion cover made of silk can help beat skin congestions, acne and even reduce creases and wrinkles.

“When I have clients who have excessive milia or breakout on one side of the face more than the other, I always ask them how they sleep and what kind of bedding materials they use. Often they are side sleepers, using quilt cover sets made of synthetic materials, which means the skin on their faces is being pressed against non-breathing materials for eight hours a night,” she explains.

Although Edel points out that having beautiful skin also comes down to nutrition, lifestyle, genes and good skincare, cushion covers made of silk can help improve your skin.‘Silk is a natural fibre that breathes more easily than other materials and helps keep the skin soft, whereas synthetic fibres can be full of invisible chemicals. All natural fibers are excellent, including bamboo and cotton, but silk is the best and is more luxurious,’ she adds.

‘If you suffer from breakouts or problem skin, I would always suggest using a natural fibre pillow case and washing it every three days to eliminate any further bacteria affecting the skin. Clients I’ve had who have tried the silk cushion have seen visible and remarkable differences within just a few weeks.’

As a bonus, silk bedding will add a bit of luxe to your bedroom according to interior stylist Emma Blomfield from TheHome.com.au. “They give off a luxurious vibe. They are great for a monochromatic scheme as it breaks up the black and white blocks of colour with some shiny textur but silk bedding works equally as well on a bed full of colours especially in jewel tones like magenta or teal,” she said.
